Which should you choose, Asana or ClickUp?

Choose Asana if

  • You want a ready structure for projects, so the team spends its time on the work, not on setting up the tool.
  • Goals and portfolios matter, so the owner sees every project's status in one place.
  • You bring clients and freelancers into projects, and want guests free on every paid plan.
  • You want AI Teammates with prebuilt agents for marketing, operations and IT.

Choose ClickUp if

  • You want the whole team on a free plan before paying, with unlimited members.
  • You'd like docs, chat and video SyncUps in the same app as your tasks.
  • You run sprints and want time tracking even on the free plan.
  • You want to pay a little less per seat on each paid step.

How do Asana and ClickUp differ in approach?

Asana gives you a ready way to run projects, and ClickUp gives you a toolkit to build your own. Asana keeps to tasks, projects, portfolios and goals, with list, board, calendar, timeline and Gantt views, so a new team member knows where things go on day one. ClickUp offers 15+ views, a five-level hierarchy, docs, goals, chat and video calls, and lets each team arrange them as it likes.

Neither is wrong. Small teams with little time for setup tend to settle into Asana faster. Teams that enjoy tuning their tools, or want to drop a separate chat app, often prefer ClickUp's breadth.

How much do Asana and ClickUp cost?

ClickUp costs less at every paid step. ClickUp Core is $9 a user a month billed yearly or $12 monthly, and Business is $17 yearly or $25 monthly. Asana Starter is $10.99 yearly or $13.49 monthly, and Advanced is $24.99 yearly or $30.49 monthly. Both price Enterprise through sales, and ClickUp adds Max at $100 a user billed yearly for its full AI engine.

The free plans suit different teams. Asana's Personal plan is for one or two people, with unlimited tasks, projects and storage up to 100 MB per file. ClickUp's Free Forever takes unlimited members but comes with 60 MB of storage, which a team sharing files fills quickly.

How does the AI compare?

Asana sells AI by the request, and ClickUp by pooled credits. In Asana, AI Teammates (more than 30 prebuilt agents for marketing, operations and IT) and Asana Dash, an "AI chief of staff" that routes work and surfaces next steps from meetings, Slack and email, share one pool: 5 requests per user a month, capped at 50 per account on Starter and Advanced. Extra requests cost $0.50 prepaid or $0.60 pay as you go, and failed tasks don't count.

ClickUp Brain covers writing, summaries, search and automation, with Super Agents you can assign tasks to and @mention. Credits are per user per month and pooled: trial credits on Free and Core, 1.5K on Business with premium models, 3K on Enterprise. Asana's AI Meetings, on Advanced, suggests action items and owners from meetings; ClickUp's AI Notetaker is unlimited on Enterprise and Max.

Which is better with clients and freelancers?

Asana is simpler for outside people on paid plans, and ClickUp for a team on the free plan. Asana gives unlimited free guest seats on every paid plan, so clients can follow their project without a licence. ClickUp's free plan has unlimited free members, and guest permissions arrive on Core.

Where does Mojobase fit?

Mojobase is a third option when most tasks start as an email, a meeting or a customer question rather than a project brief, and it's built for 1 to 25 people, and it works well for teams up to 100. Its Tasks app keeps one list per person with shared projects and assignees, and the AI drafts tasks from what lands in Email and Calendar, with a link back to the message; when a sent reply shows the work is done, it suggests ticking it off. It has no portfolios, goals, Gantt charts or sprints, so teams that run long projects are better served by Asana or ClickUp. It costs $39 a month for the first person and $25 for each after, with the AI included.
