# How to connect ChatGPT to Gmail and Google Calendar

To connect ChatGPT to Gmail and Google Calendar, open Settings → Plugins in ChatGPT, select the Google app, choose Gmail and Calendar, sign in to your Google account and approve every permission. ChatGPT can then search your mail and calendar in a chat and, if you allow it, act on them. Workspace admins may need to approve it first.

## How do you connect ChatGPT to Gmail?

You connect ChatGPT to Gmail through the Google app in ChatGPT's settings, which also covers Google Calendar and Contacts. The steps, from OpenAI's article on [connecting app accounts in ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001494-connecting-and-managing-app-accounts-in-chatgpt) (checked 7 November 2026):

1. In ChatGPT, open **Settings → Plugins** (very old versions of the iOS and Android apps call it Apps).
2. Select the Google app, or the plugin that includes Gmail, and select **Install plugin** if it's shown.
3. Select **Connect** and sign in to the Google account that holds the mail you want ChatGPT to use.
4. Review the services and permissions Google shows, choose **Select all**, and approve.
5. Back in a chat, ask something that needs your mail, such as "find the invoice the plumber sent last month".

If you see "ChatGPT needs all requested permissions", select **Try again** and approve every permission. To leave out a service such as Contacts, choose **Select fewer apps** in ChatGPT before signing in.

## How do you connect ChatGPT to Google Calendar?

Google Calendar connects in the same flow as Gmail: keep Calendar selected when you choose which Google apps to connect, and approve its permission. Some apps let you add a second account with **Connect another account**, useful for keeping a personal and a work calendar apart.

## What access does ChatGPT get to Gmail and Calendar?

ChatGPT gets the access Google's permission screen shows, and OpenAI's [Google app FAQ](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10408842-google-app-for-chatgpt-data-controls-faq) lists the scopes it requests. Google's own documentation describes what each allows:

| Service | Permission requested | What Google says it allows |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Gmail | gmail.modify | "Read, compose, and send emails from your Gmail account", without immediate permanent deletion |
| Google Calendar | calendar.events | "View and edit events on all your calendars" |

These are broad. What ChatGPT actually does with them depends on the actions OpenAI supports, your workspace's settings, and your own approval setting.

## How do you control what ChatGPT does in Gmail?

You control it with ChatGPT's app permission setting, which decides when ChatGPT asks before reading or acting. OpenAI's [connected apps article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11487775-connectors-in-chatgpt) lists the options:

- **Always ask:** ChatGPT asks before each read or action.
- **Allow read actions:** it reads without asking, and asks before changing anything.
- **Allow low-risk actions:** it takes actions OpenAI rates as low-risk; sensitive ones may still need approval.
- **Allow all actions:** for eligible apps only; OpenAI warns this "carries elevated risk because supported actions may run without another confirmation".

For a mailbox, Allow read actions is a sensible starting point: ChatGPT can search and summarise freely, and you approve anything it would send or change.

## Can ChatGPT react to new Gmail messages?

Yes, with event-triggered tasks. OpenAI says eligible users can create a task in Work that runs when a new message arrives in a connected Gmail account, with conditions on the sender or subject. The task can use only the connected account and its existing permissions, and if an action needs approval the task pauses until you review it. Pause or delete the task to stop it, or disconnect Gmail to stop all mailbox monitoring.

## What does a workspace admin need to do?

On ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu, an admin may need to switch the app on, and your Google Workspace admin may need to approve ChatGPT's access to your company's Google accounts. These can be two different people. OpenAI notes that in ChatGPT Business many apps are on by default, while Enterprise and Edu workspaces start with a selected set. If you see "Disabled by admin", ask your ChatGPT administrator; if Google refuses the sign-in, ask whoever runs your Google Workspace.

## What are the limits of connecting ChatGPT straight to Gmail?

The limit is reach: ChatGPT sees the Google account you connect and nothing else about your business. It can find the customer's email, but not whether their invoice is paid, what you promised them on the phone, or whether their order shipped, so its drafts stop at "let me check and get back to you". Connecting more apps one by one helps, but each is a separate connection with its own rules, and none of them shares a picture of the customer.

## How do you connect ChatGPT to your whole business with Mojobase?

If your email, calendar, documents, tasks, customers and numbers are in Mojobase, ChatGPT can reach all of them through one custom MCP server instead of one app per service. OpenAI's article on [connecting custom MCP servers](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12584461-developer-mode-and-mcp-apps-in-chatgpt), checked 7 November 2026, says custom MCP connections are available on ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu on the web, and on Business only admins and owners can create and publish them. On a personal ChatGPT plan, use Claude or another MCP client instead.

1. In Mojobase, open **Settings → Connect an agent** and copy your company's address (`https://app.mojobase.ai/mcp/<company>`).
2. In ChatGPT, go to **Plugins**, select the plus button, then **Add custom MCP server**.
3. Name it Mojobase and paste the address under Connection.
4. Choose OAuth for authentication; ChatGPT signs in with your Mojobase account.
5. Accept the risk warning, select **Create as a plugin**, review the tools and publish it for your workspace.

ChatGPT then acts as you in Mojobase, seeing only what you can, and everything it does is in Activity under its name, with Undo. Developer tools that can't sign in use a key from the same Settings screen instead.

If Gmail and Google Calendar are all you need, ChatGPT's own Google app is the simpler choice, and it works on personal plans. Mojobase is worth it when the answer to an email lives in more than one place.

## Questions people ask

### Can ChatGPT read my Gmail?

Yes, once you connect the Google app. It can search and reference mail from the Google account you connect, within that account's permissions and your workspace's settings. It can't see other accounts you haven't connected.

### Can ChatGPT send emails from Gmail?

The Gmail permission ChatGPT requests, gmail.modify, lets an app read, compose and send mail. Whether ChatGPT sends without asking depends on your app permission setting: Always ask, Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions, or for eligible apps Allow all actions.

### Does ChatGPT keep a copy of my Gmail?

OpenAI's Google app FAQ says app data used in a conversation follows ChatGPT's chat deletion policy: deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. If Memory is on, eligible information may personalise ChatGPT, subject to your settings.

### Why does ChatGPT say it needs all requested permissions?

Google apps in ChatGPT need every permission for the apps you selected. OpenAI's advice is to choose Try again and, on Google's screen, Select all, or to choose Select fewer apps in ChatGPT if you don't want to connect, say, Calendar.

### Can I connect Outlook to ChatGPT instead?

Yes. OpenAI lists Outlook Email and Calendar as their own apps in ChatGPT, connected the same way from Settings → Plugins with your Microsoft account.
